vicinity of Sarangan: Hire a motorboat for the lake, asking price Rp750 an hour. Rent sturdy, healthy, handsomely groomed horses for Rp500 an hour. But walking is best of all. Walk entirely around the lake, 3 km. For the Sarang Sari flower gardens and waterfalls, a 1 % hour walk. Visit the Nagadilojo Waterfall, 1 hour's walk in good weather; start on the path from Ujung Telaga. There are interesting walks to villages nearby. The highest village in the vicinity is Cemorosewu, 2116 m, a 2 hour 5 km walk or by horse Rp800 return. To Kawah Lawu (the crater), it's 5 hours on foot or Rp1500 by horseback which takes 3 hours. Lake Warung is a smaller lake 2 km down the road. It's one hour's walk to Ngerong towards Madiun by the old road (shorter than the new road), or Rp50 by Colt.

Nice walks and rivers near this village, but not as pretty as Sarangan. In Ngerong accommodation is much cheaper. Indrawati, Rp600 doubles, Rp800 for 4 persons. Losmen Tirto Taman, Rp750 for singles or doubles. Losmen Burbaya, on a hill, Rpl000-1500. Eat at Rumah Makan Anyar. There's market everyday at Plaosan, 6 km from Sarangan, Rp75 by Colt. Climb Mt. Lawu? Get a guide at Blumbang village near the top halfway between Tawangmangu and Sarangan. A guide costs Rp2500 for 2 days and one night. If it's a full moon then you can climb up and back in one day and a night. If you spend the night on the 3265 m high summit, light a big fire because it's near 40 degrees C.
