Madiun: There was an abortive communist revolt in Madiun in Sept. 1948, the first serious attempt by the communists to sieze power by force, but not their last. The Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) under Sukarno grew to 3 million members and had gained some 20 million supporters by indoctrinating youth and worker groups, labor unions and rural workers, until banned in 1967. Their abortive coup in 1965 had many uncanny parallels with their 1948 Madiun revolt. The most respected pesantren (a religious boarding school for Muslims) in Indonesia is in Madiun, Pondok Gontor. sights: Check out the 19th Century locomotives in the railyards of Balai Yasa P.J. Keretapi in Madiun. See the oldest locomotive still running on Java, commissioned in 1881.
