North of Blitar 10 km, S.W. of Malang 80 km, or 170 km S.W. of Surabaya. This is the largest complex of ruins in East Java and one of the largest temple sanctuaries in all of Indonesia. The Panataran temple group took 250 years to build, starting in about 1197 A.D. Work must have begun during the Singosari Dynasty though the most important parts were erected during the rule of the Majapahit. There are 3 gradually rising, walled courtyards laid out on a long flat field; see dance-play platforms, terraces, shrines. Temple reliefs show the transition from the 3-dimensional to 2-dimensional representations, figures tend to take 2nd place to the decorations. The design and arrangement of this complex is similar to temples of Bali and Panataran's sculpture is like an old version of Balinese art. The whole complex is very well-maintained. getting there: Wait for an antique Chevrolet to depart Blitar bus station to Nglegok village, Rp100. From Nglegok, take a dokar to Desa Panataran, 6 km, Rp200 roundtrip.

The road out to it is a delight. The Dated Temple': So called because of the date 1291 (1369 A.D.) over the entrance. A fine example of East Javanese candi architecture, this vertical temple is richly decorated with extreme exuberant detail. Carvings show a test between a vegetarian and a meat-eater, the left and the right paths of the yogi, the fat Bubuksah and the thin Gagang Aking. The bands in the roof are filled with animals. Naga Temple: Used to store sacred objects. All around it are colossal carvings of coiled serpents carried by priests and on its base are reliefs of animal tales. Main Temple: On its basreliefs the Monkey General Hanuman leads his army through the air past the flying wounded, clouds of fighting monsters, battles, and monkeys building a dam across the sea. Notice the harmonious, lovely medallions, what this site is acclaimed for. bathing place: 1515 A.D. Southeast of the main temple. Panataran was built more for the taste of the commoner than for Brahmans, and this bathing place shows flying tortoises, the bull and crocodile fable, winged snakes, ornate birds and flowers, and a lion plowing a field. These reliefs depict the Indian Tantri Tales, the Indonesian equivalent of Aesop's Fables.
