Batu

Batu: This 2000 m high mountain resort is 17 km north of Malang. Take a Colt or taxi-truck from JI. Kauman near the alun2 in Malang for Rp125-150. Batu is a small quiet town with few other travelers. Batu is dry, Selecta is wetter. Even during the rains there's always 1 or 2 hours of sunshine at Batu. stay: Central and homely Losmen Kawi, JI. Panglima Soedirman 19, Rp1000 for 1 or 2; if it's not crowded you can bargain her down to Rp500 single. Hotel Mutiara, JI. Soedirman 9 IV/146, Tel. 192, is down a small lane right under Gunung Arjuna; Rp1500 single or double, Rp2000 for 3 people. Clean and quiet except for a terrific sound system.

Penginapan Metropole, JI. Soedirman 93, Rp1000 for YHA card holders. Has a 8000 m garden in the back with '/ kilo apples, juicy avocados. This woman, who knocked a Japanese soldier off his feet during the war, can tell you some stories. She cooks excellent Javanese, Chinese, Greek and Dutch food. Losmen Maru near Cine Solo, JI. Agus Salim 234, is the cheapest at Rp600 single, Rp800 double. About 20 working girls live here (first price: Rp2500), so don't expect to get much sleep. eat: Restoran Kenangan, located beside the market, has Chinese food; cap cai, Rp250. Another quite small, cheap restaurant for Chinese-Indonesian cooking is beside the Garuda Theatre near the police station.
