Barong
(or 'Kris Dance'): A dance pantomine of a fantastic dragonlike
holy animal, the Barong, in pitched battle against the machinations
of a witch, Rangda. This is the most violent of Balinese dances
and is often used as an exorcism. The open-air Sarong is held
usually in the middle of the road. Rangda is Queen of the Layaks
(witches), her sawdust-filled breasts sagging and her tongue lolling
wickedly. She is the female principal, a ruthless child-eater
and a black magic expert belonging to the 'left' side, The Night,
bringing sickness and death. Rangda's mask is painted white with
a horrible expression of round bulging eyes and tusks protruding
from the mouth, with long hairy pieces of rope hanging down to
the ground. A white cloth is her only weapon. She runs away but
never dies. Some scholars say her origin is Shiva's wife Durga
in her evil aspect. Rangda and Barong have a long-standing feud.
Barong, a hairy, eerie, mythical lion, sides with human beings
against Rangda to thwart her evil plans. Without him, humanity
would be lost. He is The Day, the Light, The Sun, the Male Principal,
the force that overcomes evil, the 'right' side. The huge and
frightening Barong has a beard of human hair decorated with flowers,
long hair, feathers and bells all over his body. Strength is concentrated
in the beard. Manipulated by two men who take the Barong through
comic yet very complex dance movements that make people laugh-but
not too loud. At its conclusion, Rangda turns the humans' power
against them and you see men trying to willfully impale themselves
on sharp krises. After the dance is over and when they come out
of the trance, there is no trace of injury, bruising or bleeding.
