Pushbikes:
When riding a bicycle around Bali, there's appreciably more contact
with the villagers than if you were on a speedy smelly noisy motorbike.
They rent for only Rp2-300 per day. For a full week, Rp1200-1400.
For a month, cheaper still. The fewer the bikes they have left,
the higher the rental fees. Or buy a bike for around Rp20,000
from a toko sepeda in Denpasar, then arrange to have them buy
it back from you for Rp15,000 or so after you use it for several
months. Because the seats are so hard and uncomfortable, buy a
cushioned saddle for Rp900 and a seat post to heighten your seat
for long-distance riding. To get to the highlands of Bali take
bemos or buses, then when you get ready to come back it's just
2 days downhill through the breeze, touring all the way. If you
throw your bicycle on the back of a bemo, Colt, or on top of a
bus, it'll usually cost you just an extra passenger's fare. Be
sure to bring your bike inside the losmen at night; lot of rip-offs
and you could pay up to Rp1225,000 for a lost rented bike.
