Held only in time of trouble to alleviate sickness or misfortune in a village this celebrated shamanistic dance is a way of contacting the gods. The 'Virgin' or 'Trance Dances' offered by tour agents are not the Sang yang Dedari, but a laughable sham of it.-The real article is often closed to tourists, so you'd be fortunate to_ see it. The dance steps are the same as in the Legong. Two auto-hypnotized little girls become possessed by a spirit of a god and dance on the top of mens' shoulders. They never open their eyes, yet their performances coincide perfectly. Once awake, the girls don't remember any of the performance nor have they ever had formal dance lessons. When the performance is over the dancers are revived by priests who bring them out of the trance by means of incense, chants, and rhythmical movements.
