Accommodation
near Amlapura: Some of the finest places to stay on Bali are within
easy reach of Amlapura. Abian Soan: Homestay Lila, 5 km west of
Amlapura on the road to Bebamdem, Rp50 by bemo; Rp800, or Rp1000
double with a continental breakfast. Small Balinese cottages sit
only 50 m from the road on the edge of a small ravine beside a
river with rice paddies beyond. They'll prepare meals, or you
shop in Amlapura and cook at the homestay yourself. In the morning
the mountain G. Agung is clear. From the homestay walk '/, hour
to Bukit Kusambi. Every 3 days in Bebamdem there's a cattle market.
Putung: The government has built a miniature tourist resort at
Putung, 11 km beyond Bebamdem. From Amlapura, take a bemo to Bebamdem,
Rp100, then Rp100 more by bemo to the turnoff, then walk 1 '/,
km. A whole bungalow with closets, a mandi, and porch costs Rp1000,
or Rp1500 for two. There are also some bamboo and a/ang' roofed
lumbung (rice-barn) style bungalows. The bottom part is the mandi
and sitting room, the top part is for sleeping. All the bungalows
sit on the edge of a high terrace over a deep chasm which cuts
its way down to the sea. Truly a breathtaking view over the coastline
with Nusa Penida in the distance. Very cool fresh air; it doesn't
get warm until noontime. Restaurant meals are Rp4-500 (plus 10%
government tax), but you can get a nasi campur for Rp100 across
the road. Nice walks in the area.
