Serangan
(Turtle Island): Off the S.E. coast of Bali. Reached by prahu
from Sanur, Nusa Dua, or Benoa. The most beautiful seashells are
on this island; women come up with trays full to show you. But
the reefs make it dangerous to dive for them. Giant sea turtles
are caught and kept to be fattened on sea grass until sold as
a specialty to restaurants. On a moonlit night watch them lay
eggs on the beach. The children of this island fly huge kites
hoisted into the air from outrigger canoes. Pura Sekenan (Turtle
Festival) is held here once a year when droves of people cross
over the sandbars bearing offerings to the sea temples. Towering
giant puppets, barong landung, are carried by canoe in a water
procession
