Many different shades can be derived from just 2 colors, depending upon how often the fabric is dipped into the natural dye. In East Sumba the bark of the kombu tree is used and in West Sumba the color from the indigo plant (wora) is prefared, the age old colors used for the blankets being blue, red, white and brown. Sometimes the artist must wait for one particular week in the year when a certain berry comes out to make a certain natural dye. After the fibres have been dyed they are woven on a loom consisting of simply 4 bamboo sticks stuck in the ground. There are about 4 classes of Sumba blankets (selimut sumba) which are usually made and sold in pairs.
