Best
time to visit is in the dry season Mar.-Sept. as during that time
there's a regular weekly boat plying between Sape (East Sumbawa),
Komodo Island, and Labuhanbajo (West Flores), which costs Rp4000
or just Rp2000 either way to Komodo. Alternatively, count on between
Rp5000 (as low as that) or up to Rp18,000 to charter a small sailing
boat from Labuhanbajo. Share expenses with several people. The
boat rental is usually for 3 nights only, you won't get a permit
from the Forestry Department longer than 5 nights anyways. Because
of the reefs, seldom do big boats go out to Komodo but you can
take a small sailing boat which takes 36 hours; going back takes
only 12 hours. You might meet with some reluctance; there are
hazardous rip tides, sand bars, and some currents around Komodo
can attain a speed of 13 knots. In places the sea bubbles, boils
and foams like a river below a waterfall. Boats sometimes just
disappear, even in calm weather. First your chartered prahu will
go out to a small 500 sq m island where the crew dives for pearls
and you stay overnight. Next morning you reach Komodo Isla,,d.
It could be such a hassel getting out to Komodo in the rainy season
(Nov.-Mar.) that you might as well buy a macro lens and find a
couple of willing gekkos. There's a house to stay at in Komodo
village for free, or sleep on your boat, or on the beach. This
village has the only water on the island, so you must stay in
the vicinity or bring water with you. To carry your dead goat
2 km to the place where you view the dragons the villagers will
want you to pay for another guide besides the one you've already
hired from Labuhanbajo, but just refuse. If you want to hire a
boat at Komodo village to explore the island, the headman charges
your ass. dragon-watching: Take water. You can find their borrows
along the banks of dry riverbeds but the villagers know of the
best places to watch them. The dragons don't as a rule come out
of their holes in the earth and rocks until after 10 am when the
air really begins to get hot. Build a hidden shaded platform,
tie the rotting carcass to a stake, and quietly wait.
