Ikat is a very Ancient tie- Dye method of decorating rugs,shawls, blankets,each completed fabric representing a collosal amaunt of human labor. Some pieces take 2 year to make. Only Feudal, isolated, tribal, agricultural societes such as sumba's produce these ikat textiles now, and they have reached anusually high level here. These, large, rectangular cloths are traditionally used in festivities and to wrap around the dead. The process : either the wrap or the weft threads ( rarely both) are tied up and then dipped into a dye. The parts of the thread that have been tied up remain untreated. When the next color is applied, the already dyed parts are bound up and the parts left blank receive the required coloring. This process is repeated as often as required by the design and the number of colors.
