On
the north coast live the Kupundak people, a society of subsistence
farmers among whom class distinctions are still hereditary: royal
(maramba), free clansmen (kabihu), and servants fatal. Kupundak
divide themselves into patrilineal clans, each claiming descent
from a single founder (marapu). Bride prices are exceptionally
high, a way of maintaining loyalty and class rigidity. Maru: In
this village are several Marapu high-peaked houses, a type peculiar
only to Sumba. Major ceremonies take place in and around these
houses, and inside treasures sacred to the deities from the old
capital are stored. This village sits at the foot of the former
hilltop priestly capital, a royal walled village. Different clans,
including a warrior clan, once clustered around the king's residence.
Now deserted, all having moved down to the Maru river valley.
During the Ratu Festival of prayer, sacrifices and myth narration
open the planting season.
