On
the far west coast of Flores. A miserable place, dirty, no good
food, and there could be difficulties getting it together for
the Komodo Island trip. stay and eat: The townspeople will offer
to put you up for a modest price. The only losmen in the whole
village is Losmen Mekar for Rp750 a bed run by Leo, a ship's captain.
Leo will try to get Rp900, but just point at the sign. Not very
appetizing meals consisting of only rice and dried fish are served.
though in the wet season there's fresh fish. Go down to the market
each morning and buy coconuts, Rp50 each; sometimes bananas, Rp100
a bunch, and sometimes papayas. If not, look for other food in
the countryside up in the mountains.from
Labuhanbajo: There are boats to Sape (Sumbawa) once a week, Rp4000.
Walk to Ruteng in 6 days from Labuhanbajo. In the dry season,
it's quite easy to get boats from Labuhanbajo to Reo (or it takes
4 or 5 days to very pleasantly walk it). Or charter a boat for
Rp15,000-20,000. There are also boats from Labuhanbajo to Waingapu
(Sumba) for Rp3000. vicinity of Labuhanbajo: If you're going to
be stuck in Labuhanbajo for several weeks rent a small sailboat
for Rp500 a day and go out to an inhabited island (buy a mosquito
net first); many nice islands to explore around this port. There's
a petrified prehistoric forest 5 km south of Labuhanbajo, acre
upon acre of trunks lying in tangled broken heaps. Komodo dragons
are found anywhere in the eastern end of Flores (also anabas,
a land-creeping fish); just go out in the forest and wait. However,
to the west across a channel only a few km wide are 3 islands,
Komodo, Rinca, Padar, where the giant lizards live in much larger
concentrations.
