Liang
Bay or Loho Liang is about one hour's punting from Komodo village.
Pitch a tent on this semi-circular little bay, a pristine area
of white sulpher-creasted cockatoos, jungle fowls, bush turkeys,
wi/i will birds, bellowing Timor deer, snorting boars crashing
through the grass. Orchids grow in clumps at the tops of high
trees and hills of /ontar palms and shady trees rise up behind
the beach. Don't swim because the water could have sharks, and
sea snakes which can kill as quickly as a green viper or cobra.
Other isolated bays in the northern part of the island are Loho
Boko and Loho Buaya (Crocodile Bay). Ferocious and rare species
of seawater crocodiles 10 m long still turn up in bays and deserted
beaches such as these, throughout the archipelago. Gunung Arab:
With clouds enveloping its top and evil spirits lurking, this
mountain is covered in bamboo woods, monkeys, wild buffalo. Once
a handful of Arabs tried to live on Komodo and there are relics
of their settlement on this mountain; the wild buffalo found on
this island are descended from the Arabs' cattle. Climb up through
the well-trampled tracks of wild pigs and deer to the top. High
alang-slang grass hides rubble and blocks of lava, so avoid it.
Marvelous landscapes can be seen from the summit with chains of
valleys in the distance. Bring binoculars. Loho Shrikaya: A bay
on the northern side of the island with rocky lava cliffs and
a thick wood. Buaya darat are much larger here than those found
on the Komodo village side of the island. Though a land reptile,
the dragon is also a good swimmer. (How else could he have gotten
here?) Lizards stride on Loho Shrikaya's beach and swim like sea
monsters, sometimes staying submerged up to 5 minutes.
