As early as the 14th Century Sumbawa had become very wealthy through its natural resources of timber and horses. Along with Timor this island was the source of the fragrant woods, sapan and sandalwood, which European and Asian trading powers exported for over 300 years. For two centuries the Makassans of southern Celebes indulged in pillage and slaving raids along its north coast. It was they who first brought Islam to Sumbawa. The political system and the descent of the royal sultanate families of the north coast derive from the Kingdom of Gowa near Ujung Pandang. The most violent event in Sumbawa's history was the 1815 eruption of G. Tambora; its rain of ash either directly killed or eventually starved to death most of the island's population.
