Most travelers just visit Sumba in transit going to and from other islands in the area. Lying so far off the track, it could be a difficult island both to reach and to get away from. Take plenty of thinky books to read during 1 day to 1 week layovers in sleepy port towns. If you can't hitch a ride on a jeep or a truck, you got to walk on some roads which are so overgrown even the squirrels can't get over them. In East Sumba where there are many rocky hills travel is difficult even on horseback. You hear some reports of not so friendly people; most are OK, but reserved. Besides blankets, horses and graveyards, there's not much else on Sumba except huge mosquitoes.
