Like Bali, Lombok has a chain of volcanic mountains in the northern half of the island and the same climate and soil for its variety of crops, mainly rice, coffee, and tobacco. Gunung Rinjini rises to 3775 m from a high plateau area with a large lake, Segura Anak. The south, similar to Bali, has fertile alluvial plains except in the extreme south where there are scrubby barren hills; quite dry and strikingly different. The continuous alluvial fan (a continuation of the slope of the mountain) gets little rain and sometimes droughts last for months; the rice crop often fails. In 1966 fifty thousand people starved to death in 150 villages all over the island.
