KUBU PEOPLE

Remnants of a 5 ft. tall race of nomadic negrito peoples, the Kubus live in small bands of 20-30 along the swamps and dense jungles of the eastern coast of South Sumatra and in Central Sumatra. A pure branch of the first inhabitants of the archipelago who began to migrate in about 3000 B.C., the Kubus even preceed the Bataks of North Sumatra and the Torajas of Celebes. So primitive that they learned of the bow and arrow from later migrations of peoples, the Kubus are quite distinct from the Mongoloid race. This tribe doesn't practice agriculture nor do their children enter the school system. They use spears and stones in their search for food. To meet them, trek into the jungle and wait patiently in small villages where they come to trade. Or see these naked aboriginals come out from the forest and stop the bus between Jambi and Palembang and beg for money and food. They are considered savages by the present local inhabitants of these areas.
