The
Banjunglincir-Palembang river trip: From Jambi, take the Rp400
bus halfway to Banjunglincir to Batas, then walk the rest of the
way to Banjunglincir. You have to walk it from Batas because the
road is impassable. Get a hold of a stanis stia (stainless steel
ring) to keep the tigers away. From Banjunglincir, a 10 m long
boat takes 30 hours down to Palembang, Rp1500-2000 with 3 meals
a day (fresh crayfish). Go past a whorehouse on stilts, monkeys
swinging in trees, giant hornbills flapping up from jungle bush
like B-29 Bombers. Shine your torch at night into the swamps and
you can see the red eyes of crocodiles. If you don't get the boat
from Banjunglincir right away; may have to wait 3-4 days. There's
no losmen in Banjunglincir, so stay in the warung closest to the
river. Crayfish cost Rp500 a kilo. To get back to Jambi from Batas
(last bus leaves for Jambi at noon), get up at 5 am, allowing
6 to 7 hours for the walk. Don't need a guide which costs Rp1500.
Because of tigers and poisonous snakes, don't travel at night.
