Set against mountain scenery, it's hilly (910-920 m above sea level) with a cool but sunny climate and healthy fresh mountain air. Bukittinggi is a real oasis after the jungles and grungy towns further south, a great place to rest up after burning your ass raw on the bus trip. It even has sidewalks. The horses here are the best looked after in all of Indonesia. Women run the show here and they really get off on relaxed females. A small university town, many people speak English. Magicians and dukuns are always in the streets. It's suggested not to wear shorts on Fri. and Saturdays.
