good. Or see American Dr. Applewhite (from Miss.) at the Immanuel
Baptist Mission Hospital who charges Rp1000 a visit. from Bukittinggi
by long-distance bus: For bus trips south contact A.L.S., JI.
H.M. Yamin SH/41, tel. 2214. They have Mercedes buses to: Sibolga,
Rp1750; Lake Toba, Rp2400; Lubuklinggau, Rp4500, 20 hours; Jakarta,
Rp10,500; Prapat, Rp2400. There are also ordinary buses to: Sibolga,
Rp1500; Pekanbaru, Rp500, leaving at least 4 times daily; Lake
Toba, Rp1800; Lubuklinggau, Rp4250; Muaratebo, Rp2250; Prapat,
Rp1800. Bus bookings can be made from most hotels and sometimes
the bus will even come around and pick you up. Lake Toba: This
12 hour bus journey is less gruesome if you stop overnight at
Sibolga, 12 hours by bus from Bukittinggi. Book a bus ticket for
Prapat (a further 6 hours) as soon as you get into Sibolga. oplets
(local Chevrolet buses): The main op/et station is at Stasiun
Hotel Yogya, to: Kota Baru, Rp75; Kota Gadang, Rp60; Padangpanjang,
Rp75; Solok, Rp250; Padang, Rp325 (take the more picturesque road
via Solok); Payakumbuh, Rp125; Nglau Kamang, Rp75; Pandai Sikat,
Rp75; Batang Palaphu, Rp50 (reflesia anyone?); Tanah Datar, Rp200
(also to Lima Kaum, Rp200). Another station is at Aur Tanjungkang
where you can also catch Colts, bemos and op/ets to most of the
outlying areas of Bukittinggi. train: The cog wheel train to Padang
actually begins about 15 km out of Bukittinggi; sometimes it's
running, sometimes not. There's no passenger service from Bukittinggi
to Rajutanan. Ride on top of the freight car.
