A
popular dance is the Tari P/ring (Dish Dance) in which entranced
dancers perform on top of broken dishes. Tari Payung, (Umbrella
Dance) portrays a young man's loving protection of his girlfriend.
The graceful Tari Li/in (Candle Dance) is performed by girls who
rhythmically juggle and balance china saucers on which lighted
candles are stuck, clicking ring castanets at the same time. Though
also known in Palembang, it originated in West Sumatra. Randai,
a combination of literature, sport, song, and drama, is held outdoors
at night. It's put on by 20 young men dressed in ge/ambuk trousers
and black dress, accompanied by a native Minangkabau orchestra.
Using many pencak si/at movements, this dance tells the story
of a wicked woman driven from her village. Randai is performed
best in the Pagurujung area. Also see a dance demonstrating how
a beruk monkey climbs a coconut tree and picks choice coconuts
for his owner. In the Dabuih Dance men stick themselves with awls
(a show of faith) while in religiously induced trance. Instruments
played in West Sumatra include the rebab pasisir, a coastal lute
with 3 strings; and gong ensemble music.
