religion:
Having been converted by fanatical Acohnese from the north, the
Minangkabau area is one of the most staunchly Islamicized regions
in Indonesia. At the same time these people are known for their
very strong adherence to local custom, a system which would appear
in direct opposition to Islamic law. For example, it's rare that
a Minangkabau husband will have more than one wife even though
Islam allows him four. A man may have more than one wife but he
must commute between the homes of all his wives. The mother arranges
the children's marriages to ensure that the spouse comes from
an outside clan, which is very strong adat. The bride doesn't
leave home at all: she doesn't move in with him, he has to go
to her. After the wedding, the bridegroom is escorted to the home
of his bride, proudly taking with him all his possessions or his
workshop to prove that he is a man of substance. In coastal areas
there's even a groom price according to a man's title or rank.
If he doesn't wish to move in with his in-laws, he is free to
visit his new wife, askiog to be let in each night. If the marriage
doesn't work he usually marries another woman of the matrilineage,
often his wife's sister. Sons sleep at a serau (mens' meeting
house) from age 14 or so until they marry.
