A port town on the west coast 350 km from Medan whose main claim to fame is as the embarcation point for boats to the Isle of Nias. Amazing sunsets over the hill when coming into town; the mosque at sunset is good too. Hello Mr.'s abound. Meet the odd sleasy creep, characteristic of port towns. The water stinks like sulpher. Quiet fishing village north of town. stay: Hotel Indah Sari, Jl. Jen. Ahmad Yani 27-29, the most expensive joint in town; Rp4500, for 3 beds, A.C., and private mandi; Rp1650, 3 beds without mandi; Rpl 100, 2 beds and no window. Cleaner, quieter and more spacious than any of the other hotels. Next best is the Rodaminang Hotel and Restaurant, next door to Sudi Mampir; rooms for Rp900 but cleaner and airier than the other cheapies. Hotel Subur, JI. Diponegoro 19, charges Rp600, Rp900, and Rp1200 for rooms (all doubles); a flophouse with paper-thin walls, a real transient place and dirty. Losmen Sentral has rooms with 2 windows for Rp600 double; very central, near the mosque, nothing special. Hotel Sudi Mampir, JI. Mesjid 98, has 15 rooms available which are slightly better than Subur, but the same price. Has bigger rooms for Rp1200. Quite central, meals are served downstairs (nasi campur, Rp150-2001, friendly. eat: Food is somewhat expensive. Chinese restaurant Telok Indah, JI. Jen. A. Yani 63-65, has excellent funjunghai, Rp300; cap cai, Rp225. Medai Kopi Bali, JI. Let. Jen. S. Parman 45, has better than usual mie dishes, mie kuah, Rp125, or with an egg, Rp200. Restoran Slamet, JI. Katamso 30, is very clean and has quite good food.
