There's
a fascinating market on Sat. on steps of hills. Watch the sunset
from Fort de Kock, bulk in 1825 on a promontory overlooking the
town; see the smoking volcano and all the surrounding mountains
from here. At dusk giant fruit bats come out. The highest point
in town is the zoo just behind the museum, Rp60 entrance. It's
a must to walk around this zoo on Sun. when everybody parades
around in their best Minang apparel, shawls, and bright colorful
kebayas. The zoo specializes in Sumatran wildlife; the animals
are fantastic though despondent due to lousy care. The best is
the bird collection and the animals of northern Sumatra such as
the serow mountain goat (lives over 1500 m), and the anoa. Masses
of birds, 150 species at least: 3 sorts of hornbills, 6 kinds
of fishing owls, broadbills, and nearly all the pigeons of Indonesia.
Rumah Adat Baandjuang Museum is on the grounds of the zoo, Rp30
entrance. This building, opened in 1844, typifies West Sumatran
architecture. Inside are resplendent Minang wedding costumes and
headdresses, old specimens of matchlock rifles (no rifling process);
also models of obsolete and current architectural styles, sculptures,
musical and dancing instruments.
