Right
on the equator, a rugged area or gorges, mountain streams and
fields. Ngarai (or Buffalo Hole): Just on the outskirts of town
there's this 4 km long chasm with steep rocky walls; sometimes
billed as 'The Grand Canyon of Indonesia'. Best seen early in
the morning when covered in mists. Just after the panorama lookout
in Bukittinggi, take the narrow path which descends down into
the canyon. Ask the warung near the panorama where the path begins.
Walking the gorge can be a day's trip in itself. The walls of
this canyon, composed of volcanic material and layers of ashes
and stones embedded from Merapi's eruptions, are an interesting
geological study. It's possible to walk along the tracks made
by water buffaloes as far as the bamboo bridge, 12 km upriver
(walk halfway to Lake Maninjau if you care to). The track leads
up the mountainsides, then back to Bukittinggi. Many small kampungs
on the way, monkeys, etc. See the Japanese ammunition caves. Mt.
Merapi: Bright green slopes rise up to this 2440 m high volcano,
the top often disappearing in clouds; last erupted in 1926. Go
first to Kota Baru village at its base. Stay overnight, then get
up at 4 am to start the climb. See Bukittinggi and the whole countryside
from the top. Stay in the shack near the summit.
