You
don't always need permission and clearance to do something or
go somewhere. The more questions you ask, the more questions will
be asked of you. Just go and do it. In offices, open up with a
conversation first, then after a friendly exchange bring up business,
'Oh, by the way ...' When confronting the Immigration Department,
be extra respectful. 'And what would you recommend in this matter?
Play the game. If you're trying to get some paperwork through
or get something cleared through customs, say as little as possible
and be courteous. In places unaccustomed to tourists such as parts
of Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Nusa Tenggara, the police can be
almost harrassing at times.
As well as wanting to know who you are and what you are doing
all alone in their territory, they will quickly let you know that
they run the place, and also grab the chance to show off their
English, especially if there are other functionaries about who
have no command of Bahasa lnggeris. If you get into any hassels
with annoyingly officious cops, customs, or imigrasi officials,
just act stupid, meek, friendly, and innocent. In most cases,
they just want you to acknowledge the fact that they are real
and that they have the power. Bypass petty officials if you can
and go right to the top; often these higher placed men are more
intelligent, reasonable, and understanding.
