The
following dishes are found all over Indonesia. Gads is a very
healthy vegetable salad with added spices and a rich peanut sauce.
Get it at roadside stalls, Rp75-100. Nasi goreng (fried rice)
and mie goreng (fried noodles) mean rice or noodles fried in coconut
oil with eggs, meat, tomato, cucumber, with shrimp paste, spices
and chills added; these are common breakfast dishes for Indonesians.
If istemiwa ('special') is written after a dish, it usually means
it comes with an egg on top. Another nourishing dish is the Chinese
cap cal, a kind of Indonesian meat and vegetables chop suey. Soto
means that a thick santen (coconut cream) is added to the soup;
this is also a breakfast dish. Sop is more like a meat and vegetables
stew; it means only that water is added. Chilies and soybean sauce
(kecap) are the favorite spices. When in doubt as to whether the
dish is spicy hot or not, just ask 'Pedas atau tidak?' There are
many kinds of hot chili sauce (sambal) and spiced chili pastes;
the one from Padang, West Sumatra, is the hottest in the world.
Kretek cigarettes help cool down your throat after a chili burning.
Or if it's too hot just squeeze lemon with some salt over the
dish to make it less so
