The best time to visit Indonesians in their homes is between 4 and 6 pm after work, food, and siesta; and in Islamic areas, before the evening prayers. Visitors are never turned away. If you are kept waiting for your host to appear, it's a compliment: he's changing into nice clothes to receive you. Conversely, he'd be offended if you visited him only in a sarung or a singlet. It is polite to introduce yourself when meeting strangers and not to wait for someone else to do the introductions. Do shake hands when greeting people; women and men will offer their hand. Respect is shown by bowing from the waist when passing in front of people, especially older people. Never eat with the left hand. Use it with water instead of toilet paper. Wash your hands, in particular your right hand, since you will be eating with the right hand fingers in a village. Your Indonesian hosts will certainly do so and you are expected to follow suit. In the cities people eat more often with a spoon in the right hand and a fork in the left hand.

If you are invited by an Indonesian to eat or drink, watch your host since a guest may not start if not invited to do so by the host, with si/ahkan (sometimes 20 minutes later). Take a small helping the first time around because you'll be expected to eat a 2nd helping. Your host will be offended if you don't. It is polite to keep pace with your host. (If you empty your plate, it means you want some more). Don't ask for salt, pepper, soya sauce, or sambal. It is an insult to the cook, implying that the cook did not know which spices to add while cooking the dish. Be careful not to offend your Indonesian friends, 90% of whom are Muslims, who are forbidden to eat pork. In their company never ask for or offer dishes prepared with pork or lard. Share the meal you're eating when a visitor arrives in your house, office, or park bench. Share your cigarettes around and if you've been into town bring back some biscuits for the kids (if you've got the money). Do talk politics (except with the army or with the police), who else is going to tell them? Travelers should be prepared to make of the night, the day. Many forms of entertainment, prayers, and religious festivals run all night long. In some places people stay up all night on the night of the full moon simply for the coolness and for the magic of it. There's plenty of magic left in Indonesia
