society Parents buy a house for each daughter when she gets married
and usually end their lives in a shack surrounded by the houses
of their daughters. Often away for long periods on business (merantau),
a husband lives with his bride in her parent's house. Living like
guests, husbands are powerless in the home, thus play a small
role in the upbringing of children and in the maintenance of the
house. The word for wife is njang po rumoh, 'the one who owns
the house'. A woman divorces her husband by putting all of his
belongings at the bottom of the steps. He is too ashamed to do
any thing but grant it. Women are called brides' and the birth
of their first child. At birth, if the umbilical cord doesn't
come all the way out it's believed that it can crawl back into
the womb and kill her. After birth women can't leave the house
for 45 days and there are also many dietary prohibitions. Her
bodyis 'roasted' over hot bricks which will make her trim and
healthy again.
