from
the Philippines: Because of an agreement between the two governments
aimed at curtailing gunrunning, travelers can't go by sea from
the Philippines into Indonesia or vice versa. You can only fly.
Either take a flight from Manila to Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) with
MAS for about US$138 (Brunei Air could be cheaper); or catch a
flight with Swift Air Co. from Zamboanga, Mindanao (southern Philippines)
to Tarakan each Tues. for US$135. Merpati operates a charter for
US$150 from Manila to Bali 'x' number of times per month; very
irregular. Although boats to East Malaysia from the Philippines
aren't that regular, they are cheaper: from Manila to Palawan
Island (get a stretcher to sleep on), then another boat to the
small island of Labuhan. From Labuhan to Brunei it's only Brunei
$5 by motorboat. from Thailand: Jay's Travel Agency in Bangkok
(near the Malaysia Hotel) sells fake student cards for US$6.
Vingh
Thai Hotel and Liberty Hotel issue A.U.S. tickets (on good authority)
to any age; cheap fares to Indonesia and to the rest of Asia (also,
if you're interested, Kuala Lumpur to Copenhagen, US$240). from
Europe: Fly charters from Amsterdam to Singapore for S$630-650
one way which is cheaper than to fly from Sydney to Singapore
(about S$900); then from Singapore, Indonesia is only S$115 away
by launch and ship. from USA: Some companies sell tickets for
as little as US$760 round trip, good for a year. T.I.A. Airlines
from Seattle to Hong Kong is US$313. Charter flights round trip
from L.A. to Bali for US$750 just started up in 1977. Or, cheaper
than any of these, take a ship from Vancouver to New Zealand,
then up to Indonesia via Australia
