++
Bargain hard always for everything everywhere including medicine
in drugstores, hospitalization, immigration fees, entrance charges
to museums, no matter what it is. The more Indonesians overcharge,
the less communication there is and the more impoverished the
communication becomes. Ask the price of everything first; don't
ever assume anything or take a bystander's word for it. For luxury
items like carvings and paintings (never show your true interest),
start out with '/4 the price they ask; for services like buses,
becaks, laundry, photo prints, start out at '/z of the price they
ask; for essentials like canned groceries, room rental, soap,
start off at %'s of the price they ask-roughly. Bargaining is
a leisurely and friendly exchange. Make the first offer so that
the trader doesn't start out too high. Go up only Rp 10-25 at
a time, fight for every decimal. When they smile it means your
offer was too realistic, when they frown the bargaining's reaching
its conclusion. Don't try to get the same prices as the locals,
you can't. You pay according to your station in life. If you say
you're poor, they just laugh. If you're poor, how come you're
there?
