For plain comfort, wear what Indonesians wear like cool sarungs
and kains, and do what they do. Besides its most common use as
a colorful wraparound skirt, a sarung is also an all purpose garment
used to carry fruit or babies, as a baby hammock, to cover yourself
while bathing, as a nightgown or bedcover, as comfortable informal
wear tied over the breasts, as an umbrella, etc. Man-made chemical
fabrics (nylon, rayon, etc.) are too hot and sticky, so just wear
drip dry cotton clothes. At night Indonesians of all ages love
to cuddle a long skinny sausage-shaped pillow, the bantal gu/ing
('Dutch Wife'), which looks like a punching bag.
This
pillow absorbs the sweat so that you can sleep sounder while it
delightfully fits the contours of arms and legs. In cheap hotels
keep mosquitos off by moving your bed under a fan or by using
mosquito coils lobat nyamuk) which are quite effective, slightly
nauseating, and can be bought anywhere for Rp75100. If you lay
your mattress out in strong sunlight, bed-bugs will vacate it.
Take a mandi to stay cool, though if it's too hot it'll give you
a headache. When you're hot, bring your inner body temperature
up to the outside temperature by drinking hot tea; cold cokes
just make you all the the thirstier. It's good to be out in the
sun's torrid heat sometime during the day; it has a purifying
effect.
