If you get bronchitis, get into dry country. If you're seriously ill, get to Jakarta (which has Indonesia's best medical facilities), Semarang, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, or Singapore, cities which have the best equipped hospitals. You can buy most medicines in Indonesia without a prescription but you'll need to bargain heatedly in the drugstores (apotek). Keep all medicines out of reach of Indonesians; it's like candy to them. Doctors cost much less in Indonesia (Rp1000-2000) than say in Thailand. As a general rule, if you have to go to a doctor at all, go to a Chinese one. All reports indicate that Bali has really freaky medical services and that malpractice is widespread. There's a hospital in Kediri, East Java, run by American 7th Day Adventists. If you need an operation, go there or to Singapore. In many of the outer islands the only treatment available is from small foreign supported missionary clinics or poorly staffed and outfitted government health centers.
