Herbal medicines, called jamu, are derived from plants, grasses, minerals, fungi, roots, barks, parts of mammals, birds, and reptiles. They come in the form of pills, capsules, powders, beans, peas, flat seeds, or else look like tea leaves. See tri-colored jamu stalls in the markets painted up like barber poles with lots of packages, little jars and bottles in them. Go up and act out your illness or pain and they'll know what you'll need. Jamu is cheap, about Rp25 a packet; the 'super' is served with egg, 2 sorts of wine, a cup of sweet tea and a lolly afterwards, Rp100. Most jamus have real pop names like Rooster (Cap Jago) or the Fountain of Youth (Air Mancur). There are hundreds of different jamus for every conceivable malady. Javanese women look astonishingly well preserved after having 6 kids because new mothers take up to 10 jamus internally and externally over a period of 40 days after delivery to remove any excess blood from the body, to contract abdominal muscles, for slimming, to restore vigor, to reinforce sex appeal. Patmosari or Jamu Galian Singset makes women between 20 and 50 younger looking, causes the vagina to become tighter, revitalizes and slims her. Women over 50 drink a special jamu to keep themselves from getting too thin. Jelok Temu is given to one year old babies for strength.

Jantung fortifies the heart. Ginjal is for inflamed appendix, making an operation unnecessary. Kumis Kucing (cat-whiskers) is for urinary tract infections. Beras Kencur peps you up all day. If you're tired, on a bad depressing trip, take a 40-day course of the curative Colasan which really blasts you right out of whatever it is that's hanging you up; like an organic speed clearing. There are mens' tonics to increase strength and if rubbed on at night all feeling of tiredness and stiffness are gone by morning. There are also herbs to strengthen and increase health of the hardworking woman, jamus for colds, tightness or dizziness of the head, runny nose, sore throat, bronchitis, flu, 'starryeyes', anti-cough herbs, others for sore bones, backaches and listlessness. Jamus can quickly smooth out wrinkled skin, cure bloodshot eyes and hangovers, intestinal tapeworms, stomach sickness, indigestion and overeating, pimples, skin diseases and rashes. Girls take Kokok after menstruation, cleansing the blood, beautifing, making the eyes and face bright. Other jamus are for late menstruation or taken before to ensure that it comes on time (but be warned that it can cause abortions if 1-2 months pregnant). Special aphrodisiacal jamus are available to increase virility. For women, especially mothers with many children, there is 'magic formula No. 125'; they will find that their husbands will become more considerate
