Indonesian
money is called rupiah (Rp). US$1= Rp615-625. The rates for foreign
currencies depend on the bank and even on the branch of the bank.
Check with the money changers in Singapore's Change Alley near
the G.P.O.; they could give a good rupiah rate for Australian
or US cash. The best rates in Indonesia are usually found in tourist
towns. US currency has the most fixed rate of exchange because
the rupiah is based on it. But don't make the mistake of always
translating Indonesian prices into US currency; think in rupiahs,
not in dollars. It doesn't cost 'just' 80 American cents, it costs
300 goddamn rupiahs! Swaggering with your money in Indonesia is
super-uncool.
To
the man-inthe-street a dollar's worth of rupiahs has the same
emotional impact as US$5 has to us. US$300 is enough to keep a
rural Indonesian family of 6 for a year. There's no black market
so bring travelers cheques for safety. Buy American Express or
Cook's T.C.'s because these companies have branches in Jakarta,
Singapore and all over the world, in case you lose them. Some
of Australia's savings banks and other lesser known banks without
agents in Asia will let you starve before they replace your lost
cheques. Traveler's Cheques usually carry a better rate than cash,
but carry some USS1's and US$5's in case you need quick money
when banks are closed..
