Get jobs in the oil and timber companies with profitsharing contracts in Indonesia by applying in the companies' offices in Houston, Dallas, Jakarta, or Singapore. You have a chance in Singapore, but don't go to the offices, go to the bars: Club 392 on Orchard Road, Genieveve's in the International Bldg., the Tropicana Club next to the Shaw Center, the Ambassador Hotel and the Country Club Hotel in Katong, and other places where the oilies and chippies hang out. Get your interview, medical examination, work visa, and sign the contract all in Singapore; in Indonesia all this is too much of a tiring ordeal, including questions like 'Where were you and what did you do on 30 Sept. 1965?' Jobs going in the timber companies are for heavy equipment operators and mechanics. Those with oil companies usually are for offshore rig operators as a roughneck (on the floor of the rig), derrickman (on top of the mast), or as a loadmaster Irelaying instructions to coptors building rigs from the air)-all unskilled jobs, just takes a knack to do them.

Some companies give 1 week on the job and 1 week off, others 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. They fly you in and out of Singapore for free. The basic wage for most jobs is about US$1800 and you could even land a job as Head Gardner in Balikpapan at US$1600 per months. others: Caucasian women can work as magazine and advertising models in Jakarta, quite well paid. English teaching in Jakarta and Surabaya is big business. No qualifications, they'll take anyone who speaks intelligible English. In some schools, classes read 'American dialogue, listen to the Aussie accent on tapes, while learning under a German teacher! The school gets to use you to draw the students in and the students have a bit of fun communicating with a real live native speaker in a real live language lab (though most have fake or faulty technical equipment). You're obliged to stay a little while, the course is usually 3 months. You are paid an average of Rp750-1000 per hour, though in Bandung the wage is Rp1500 per hour, or Rp2000 if you speak Indonesian. I.E.C. Schools (Intensive English Course) will arrange a work permit for you after 3 months on the job.
