Traces
of Hindu-Buddhist temples have been excavated at Cangkuang and
at Cibuaya in West Java. But by far the highest concentrations
and the best preserved have been uncovered in Central and East
Java, a region known as the 'Realm of the Dead'. For more than
750 years (732 A.D. to about 1405 A.D.) temples were built all
the way from the Dieng Plateau in Central Java to Candi Kedaton,
near Bondowoso in East Java. Ruins are still being unearthed.
Most of the art of the early Hindu period has perished and relatively
little is known of the development of art until the 8th Century,
the beginning of the Hindu Indonesian period. Because of the tropical
climate, enly the work of the stone sculptors and the megalith
builders has survived, leaving remains of temples not only on
Java but all over Sumatra, on Sulawesi, and even as far as Borneo.
When searching for ancient monuments there's most always a sign
on the roadway and an arrow pointing the way to the candi.
