candi:
This word is derived from the Sanskrit Chandgrika (House of the
Goddess of Death) or Candika, another name for Durga (Goddess
of Death). The present-day meaning of candi is roughly 'temple',
regardless of the temple's purpose or its religious source. Outwardly,
candis don't differ from temples serving for regular worship of
Hindu deities, but many Javanese candis were dedicated to the
cult of the dead. On some supposedly 'Hindu' temples on Java,
there's a combination of Hinduism plus a monument to a god-king,
ancient nobleman, ancestor, sire or teacher whose ashes are buried
underneath the cahdi. In some temples the dead king is actually
depicted as a Hindu god, his spirit presiding in a statue of a
god which can be contacted ritually. Thus, candis were magic centers
radiating power.

Irrigation farming long ago created on Java an intensely cooperative
society where villages grouped together under strong district
rulers who were needed to control the flow of water. The ability
to support luxurious pastimes as immortalizing oneself or one's
god by erecting such impressive monuments which required decades
to build, massive human toil and suffering, indicates a gigantic
agricultural wealth. The candis you see today were once surrounded
by flowering trees, high walls, and tall gates opening to inner
courtyards. All around these sumptuous temple complexes were shady
lanes, ricefields, and the bamboo homes of the people. Seldom
do you see any of these ruined temples venerated today. Candis
were rich Brahmins' structures, the temples of the people were
built of just wood and bamboo. But the temple-builders created
the seeds of their own destruction. Working the peasants too hard
was the most likely reason why power shifted from East Java in
the 10th Century and did not return until the 16th Century. Temple
construction had all but stopped by the end of the 15th Century
with the Mount Lawu group being one of the last remnants in stone
of the Java-Hindu era.
