When
fossil remains of the erect ape pithecanthropus were found on
Java in 1891, scientists guessed that Java was the original location
of the Garden of Eden. This island is one of the richest, lushest,
most densely populated, and ranks among the loveliest regions
on earth. Theatre-stage scenery. Never forget it. The sun rising
over Java is deep red, then orange, then bright yellow, as big
as a barn. Deep purple, fiery volcanoes tower over a land of intense
green plains, rice terraces, twisting mountain passes, cool hillside
resorts, remote crater lakes, wild game parks, botanical gardens,
serene beaches, dense rainforests, limestone hills, thick bamboo
groves, teak forests. Many areas of Java can be compared to India
because of the congestion, the rice paddies, the explosive colors:
' I see India everywhere, but I do not recognize it.' said the
great Bengali poet Tagore when he visited Java in 1927.
Its people belong to the oceanic branch of the Mongoloid race
with light brown skin, straight black hair, high cheekbones, small
and slender builds. Here live primarily two ethnic groups, the
Sundanese of West Java (15 million) and the Javanese of Central
and East Java (about 65 million). The Dutch concentration of all
their resources on Java for several hundred years greatly increased
the differences between it and the other islands of Indonesia.
Educationally, it's the most advanced. Java's technological institutes
form the backbone of Indonesia's tertiary education. Java is top
heavy with industry, the island of opportunity where young men
flock to find jobs. Yet, because of its giant population, Java
could never survive if it were left to its own resources: it would
be a head without a body. Java is both young and old. It was the
genesis of Indonesia's most powerful martime and agricultural
kingdoms, and contains by far the best preserved and highest number
of monuments, many completed centuries before Columbus discovered
America.
