religion:
Once again, out of sheer numbers the religion of Java is no doubt
the most potent political force in Indonesia. In its early years,
Javanese Islam was a merger of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) and
nativb superstition rather than of Islam and Hinduism proper.
For centuries Javanese feudalism was the true religion, not the
law of the Koran. Only in the 19th and 20th Centuries did Islam
penetrate rural Java so deeply as to upset the traditional patterns
of authority. Agama Jawa (Religion of Java) has evolved into a
totality of religious beliefs and practices, an incredible blending
of doctrines. In the Javanese story of creation, all the world's
major religions have been taken into account.
The
Javanese today practice their own slant, their own interpretation
of Islam, shot through with animistic rites. Javanese pamongs,
black magicians, mystic teachers and dukun (healers) are famous
for their oracular powers and often influence powerful politicians.
Incense is burned before beautiful works of art such as a topeng
mask, a kris, a gong, or a famous bronze game/an. They could be
objects of worship to individual families or to villages, often
forming legends around themselves. These pusaka can charm people,
ward off sickness and evil, make the rains come on time.
