poverty-sharing: Because of Java's unbelievable population density, a phenomenon known as 'shared-poverty' is often seen. It means basically that for what jobs there are, there are too many people. So, many do a job that takes few. Half a dozen people work on a car, 3 men milk a goat, bales of tobacco are shared by buyers as a way of spreading risks if they're not sold quickly, becak drivers share territories, and stall owners haggle and peddle intensively, or else trade goods constantly in order to keep business and money circulating at all times. Everyone survives just below or just above the poverty line by dividing, for example, the per hectare gains when there's a declining ratio of ricegrowing land to each man as population increases.

Good professors are so scarce that they are flown around the outer island universities giving lectures. In Solo, Central Java, there are so many university teachers that each teacher is allowed to teach only 4 hours per week, or full-time, 8 hours a week. This unique system is able to absorb most everyone, providing all with at least some kind of work to earn their daily bread. Instead of some being really poor, everybody's just a little poor.
