reliefs:
The characters and themes from the Indian epic poems on basreliefs
of temples are very common because in the 12th Century a courtly
kakawin poem was written (inspired by the Indian version) which
became immensely popular, greatly stimulating the plastic arts
of Java. Indonesian narrative poems carved in relief aren't nearly
as sexually explicit as in India. The everyday life of ancient
tropical Java is made abundantly clear with pots, pans, small
lizards, ropes, birds robbing grain bins, fruit markets, parading
priests. Archaeologists can derive the date of a monument by 'reading'
certain animals somewhere on the structure; such as 3 frogs, 2
crabs, 3 iquanas and an eel = 1451 A.D. Highly durable 'diamond
plaster' enabled carvers to add extreme detail, helped to preserve
the carvings, and provided a base to paint bright colors upon.
Equatorial
wind and rain have worn smooth the now exposed carvings and ornamentation
to such an extent that many reliefs have lost much of their vividness
and definition even in the mere 40 odd years since they were first
photographed in the 20's and 30's. The most superb example of
JavaHindu art, Borobudur, is now being eaten by lichen, cracked
by seeping water, all its classical carvings disintegrating and
nearly illegible. The monument is slowly but surely sliding off
the hill on which it was built, as bungling bureacrats try vainly
to save it. The finest sculpture of the Central-Javanese period
makes up today part of the royal collection in Bangkok, plus other
outstanding collections in Leyden and Amsterdam.
