If
you're a writer or a journalist, don't say so. If you think there's
going to be any trouble at all, submit your passport with a big
travel agency who'll get it processed for you; there's a better
chance of getting through since they do 100's of passports at
a time. These travel agents charge extra for the mailing and legwork;
about Aus$10 for a 28 day or around Aus$26 for a 5 week visa.
At the Indonesian consulate you might be asked for air tickets
intoand/or out of Indonesia before you're issued a visa. In this
case the cheapest is to just buy a MAS ticket' for Aus$38 from
Medan, North Sumatra, to Penang, Malaysia. The TAA office in Darwin
won't sell you tickets for this flight because too many freaks
cash it in and take the Medan-Penang boat, which is only Aus$20
(when it's working).
One
way to get around the onward ticket bit is to get a Miscellaneous
Charge Order (MCO) which looks like an air ticket but is really
just a receipt for money which you deposit with them. Just write
in the travel details space 'Medan-Penang' or 'Jakarta-Singapore'
or the like. This is acceptable to consulate officials and if
bought from a large international airlines it can be cashed in
any airlines office in the world whereas an air ticket can usually
only be cashed in the office where you bought it. If you want
a student discount, tickets usually have to be paid in cash thus
you can only use an MCO towards full fare purchases. Going east
to Indonesia, Singapore is the last place you can cash in a TAA
ticket.
