++
transport:
No problems getting around. Java has 3/4's of all tarred roads
in Indonesia. Each district has its own type of bus, cart, wagon,
gig, carriage, oplet and becak with their own harnesses, designs,
colors. Hitching is fairly good. trains: Take trains on Java,
day-buses are too tiresome and hot. Student discounts are given
only on the cheap trains (25%-33% off). The senya (dusk) trains
leave Surabaya and Jakarta around 6 pm and rehch the center of
Java (Yogya) around 8 or 10 am. They also leave from Central Java
at dusk for Jakarta and Surabaya. Two parallel railways run the
whole length, along the north coast and another through the center
via Yogya and Bogor. Krupp locomotives commissioned in 1881 are
still running.
No
point is more than 80 km from a RR station. boats and ships: Nor
can you get more than 160 km from the sea. There are hundreds
of ports on the north coast. Surabaya and Jakarta are the best
ports from which to catch kapa/ motors and ships to the outer
islands. buses: For the really out of the way places, take buses
rather than trains. Always ask the guys in the white shirts in
the bus station information office about which buses to where
and when. Most helpful. Leave your gear safely with them so you
can wander around town before catching your bus out. On Java the
bus and taxi stations are often called by the old Dutch name:
stanplatz. On some of the long-distance buses or bis ma/am (night
bushes) meals, snacks, and drinks are included in the fare.
