A
four week visa costs Aus$3.20 and a five week visa costs Aus$23.20
(Aus$20 extra for the so-called Landing Fee). Pay for this Landing
Fee in the country you get your visa in and get it over with;
make sure that 'Landing Fee Paid' is stamped or written in your
passport no matter where you get it. For the 6 month Visitor's
Visa, fill out a special application form and show a letter from
a sponsor or a guaranteor in Indonesia. On this sort of visa you
still have to pay the Landing Fee but you pay only the ordinary
price for each of your 5 extensions which you should receive automatically.
Bring the sponsor's letter with you because the imigrasi officer
in Indonesia sometimes asks to see it for extensions. Work visas
such as for teachers are issued for up to 2 years.
Research visas (anthropology is easier to get than archaeology)
usually run a year or 2, although at times given for only 3 months.
All research visas must go through LIPI (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahran
Indonesia), a body in Jakarta that arbitrarily clears each one.
Often LIPI makes more difficulties for you than they actually
help you. You could hassel with them in Jakarta for weeks, the
real run around. And even if LIPI authorizes your request for
a research visa, BAKIN (the security arm of the government) could
block it. An indefinite residency permit will run you about US$1000;
cheap for such a startlingly exciting place to live, especially
if you have a steady income. Inside Indonesia itself it's almost
impossible to change over from a tourist visa to a resident visa
through official channels. Some travel agents can fix up resident
permits for you for a fee.
