If you stay in Indonesia more than 28 days or 5 weeks, you have to start haggling with imigrasi. You can always get a 3-4 day extension over your 28 day visa to meet a ship or plane (if you show them your ticket) but anything longer than that you have to pay the infamous Landing Fee. In each imigrasi office it's a personal business transaction between the official and you and the price that he finally decides upon for a visa extension ranges from Rp2000-3500. In many offices you can even get away with bargaining a bit, especially for the more expensive extensions of work or resident visas. Get visa extensions only in provincial capitals, /bu Kota, on each island. To get more than 6 weeks could be difficult and sometimes a letter of recommendation from a government official or a respected propertyowning sponsor is necessary. If you stay over 3 months then you must 'register as an alien' and pay Rp750 (plus Rp200 for 2 forms) and be fingerprinted.

Organizations like Sumarah in Solo, Central Java, have been known to make it easier for travelers to get extensions in order to study their religious discipline. It's easier for Europeans to get extensions than it is for North Americans or Australians, and for some reason, easiest of all for Germans. Right now Bandung, Ujung Pandang, Lombok, (Mataram), and Jayapura are the most sympatico imigrasi offices in Indonesia and still fairly cheap;i people even get a2nd month in those places. In Surabaya and other places unofficial monthly extensions, if you've already spent 4 months in Indonesia, cost Rp15-20,000; if you pay the Rp20,000 each month you can stay in Indonesia indefinitely. You can get visa extensions to remain in Indonesia (to export handicrafts and textiles, for instance) if you have an Indonesian sponsor you or if you start up a company with an Indonesian, then 'the company will sponsor you. If you can no longer get visa extensions and still want to spend more time in Indonesia, every 6 weeks or so go to Singapore, Tawau (East Malaysia), Port Moresby (P.N.G.), Australia, or Penang (peninsular Malaysia) to get a new visa, then return to Indonesia for another round of visa extensions.
