Bedaya: Many different versions. One of the oldest and most sacred forms is Bedaya Ketawang, performed on the anniversary of the Susuhunan of Solo's ascension to the throne on the 2nd day of the month Ruwah by the Javanese calendar. It has its beginnings over 400 years ago. This dance is dedicated to the dreaded South Sea Goddess Nyah Loro Kidul who was said to have appeared to the first ruler of the dynasty, Sultan Agung (1613-1645) and expressed her love for him by dancing and singing before him. The dancers, also called Bedayas, are traditionally selected from families related to the sultan. They belong to the innermost ceremonial life of the kraton, where this dance form reached its highest development.

Their period of training is long and they must also sing. The 9 dancers (girls aged 15-16 years) are dressed like brides with their hair piled up in a bun on top of their heads. They wear beautiful intricate haircoils of gold and precious stones and jasmine buds. They must fast before the dance to purify mind and body, nor must any of them be menstruating. First, offerings to the gods (sajens) are made. The dance lasts 90 minutes. A female choir sings a litany while dancers move languidly, punctuated by chanting and hypnotic bell-like sounds, incense and flicks of long sashes and gentle kicks with long swirling trains. Dancers are like priestesses in their detachment, solemnity and gestures, their gowns undulating like sea waves. Showers of petals are thrown over the audience. Performances are kept secret so as not to anger the goddess if photographs were taken. The South Sea Goddess is invisibly present and if the dance displeases her, she carries one of the dancers off to the bottom of the sea. You might get in on one of the rehearsals, which lasts a week.
