colors: There are striking regional differences in the colors used. Blue-indigo, made from the plant, is the oldest. Human blood was at one time a prized natural dye. The Central Javanese sultanates in Yogya and Solo keep to indigo, dark browns and deep blues, colors of dignity. Maroon (soga), the official court color, is also popular. Mauve is unsuitable for any but young unmarried girls. In the northern coastal districts and on Madura, bright reds, yellows and greens are most dominant. West Javanese batik has more light browns, golden yellows and rich deep blackish-blue backgrounds. Cirebon has its 'shadow technique'.

Modern batik makes more use of multicolored combinations: crimson, yellow and green mixed with blue and yellow and black are the main colors used. Batik looks brilliant in summer sunshine which brings out the colors that much more. Darker colors look stunning next to dark complexions or on deeply tanned skin. Note: Don't ever use strong detergent when washing batik, only a mild handsoap. If chemical dyes are used (usually really bright colors), batik lasts 25-30 years; for organic dyes, which fade into a rich deep color, 45-50 years. Sometimes the fabric is dipped into an organic dye up to 25 times.
